 Antibiotics

Antibiotics are useful only for bacterial infections. Most infections our children acquire are viral and do not need antibiotics. We determine which infections are viral or bacterial by the exam and various laboratory tests (blood count, Rapid strep). Colds are viral infections. If I think your child has a cold, they will not get an antibiotic – I will give cold medication to relieve the symptoms. Antibiotics are reserved for ear infections, pneumonia, sinusitis, strep throat, bronchitis, and urinary tract infections. A recent announcement by the American Academy of Pediatrics is even advocating not treating ear infections with antibiotics (since 80% are viral) in an effort to reduce the amount of inappropriate antibiotic usage that is occurring and thereby contributing to the great problem of resistance we are now facing.
