§ At this second visit the infant is usually older than one week and we can now obtain the blood sample needed for the second newborn metabolic screen (previously known as the PKU). This is a state mandated test. The first one was done in the hospital. The second blood test is performed after the child has been feeding for a week to increase the likelihood of detecting a metabolic disorder where products of metabolism may be accumulating in the newborn’s blood.
§ A complete exam is done and weight measured as before and your concerns are addressed.
