§ A repeat of the 2-month visit for exam, weight check, and immunizations, except the infant will not receive a Hepatitis B vaccine (they have already received the second dose at 2 months).
§ This is the earliest that solids may be introduced. I recommend starting with the most hypo-allergenic food – rice cereal. Mix the powdered cereal in formula, breast milk or water to the consistency of applesauce. Once again, do not put it in the bottle. Mix up only a few tablespoons to begin with and feed with a tiny spoon. Your infant will probably push it out with his/her tongue for the first few tries until they realize how to swallow it. Be patient – it may take several feedings before the skill is mastered. Start by offering feedings twice a day (before offering the bottle if possible).
§ Stay with the rice cereal for 1-2 weeks before offering another cereal type – oatmeal, barley or wheat. Wait another week before offering the next solid food type. Five days of a new food should be given before offering another new food in order to observe for food intolerances (rash, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, fussiness).
§ After at least two cereals are established, then you may introduce a fruit or a vegetable (Stage 1 only). I do not feel it makes any difference which you start with. I suggest that you alternate fruits and vegetables to provide some variety in taste.
§ Your infant will be starting to roll over at this age – first front to back and later back to front.
